On July 10, 2020, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) in cooperation with Gateway House held an online round-table discussion “Situation on the Global Energy Market and Prospects for Russia — India Cooperation”.

Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs, Manjeet Kripalani, Executive Director, Gateway House, and Suren Vardanyan, Vice President, Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry, opened the meeting, while Amit Bhandari, Research Fellow, Gateway House, and Danila Bochkarev, Senior Research Fellow, EastWest Institute, presented key speeches.

Lydia Kulik, Head of India Studies, Skolkovo Institute for Emerging Markets, Research Fellow, RAS Institute of Oriental Studies, Tirthankar Patnaik, Chief Economist, National Stock Exchange of India, Yury Borovskiy, Associate Professor, MGIMO University, Rohit Ahuja, BOB (Bank of Baroda) Capital Markets, Alexey Zakharov, Research Fellow, RAS Institute of Oriental Studies, S.K Joshi, Former Chief Financial Officer, Bharat Petroleum, and Nandan Unnikrishnan, Distinguished Fellow, Observer Research Foundation, took part in the discussion. Ksenia Kuzmina, RIAC Program Manager, chaired the meeting.

The participants discussed general trends in the development of the global energy market and the markets of Russia and India. Special attention was paid to energy trading in national currencies, as well as to the possibility of creating alternative benchmarks in oil trade with India. Experts evaluated the impact of environmental protection requirements on the energy market and the prospects for transition to renewable sources, while Indian experts emphasized that in the next 15–20 years, the country will continue to focus on traditional energy sources. The participants naimed LNG, the construction of energy infrastructure and mutual investments in the energy sector as the most promising areas for the development of Russian-Indian cooperation.
