On April 14, 2021, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) held a public international expert discussion on the topic “Perspectives on the arms control agenda in 2021: Obstacles and opportunities”.

The panelists included HE Izumi Nakamitsu, United Nations Under- Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs; Major General (Retd) Yao Yunzhu, Academic Committee Member, Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS), Tsinghua University; and Dr Andrey Kortunov, Director General, Russian International Affairs Council.

The event was moderated by Dan Smith, Director of SIPRI. The discussion focused on the old and new challenges to arms control, bilateral and multilateral formats of arms control agreements, the future of the nuclear non-proliferation regime, and the importance of confidence-building measures in the strategic sphere.
