On February 24, 2014 Seoul hosted an international conference on development of the Far East and cooperation between South Korea, China and Russia. The event was organized by Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade.
Russia was represented by RIAC Program Manager Lyudmila Filippova and Anatoly Savchenko, Assistant Director at the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of the RAS Far East Department. The conference was also attended by representatives of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, University of Washington, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.

The development of the Far East became an integral part of Russian political and expert debate long ago. The first federal target program on the Far East development was elaborated back in 1996. Currently, apart from the corresponding legal acts, there is a special ministry working on this issue. In 2013, the office of Presidential Representative in the Far Eastern Federal District was equaled to vice-premiership, which points to the high position of the region in the hierarchy of state priorities.
As for Russia's engagement with the Asia-Pacific, Moscow primarily pays attention to the integration of the country's eastern regions, in particular the Far East, in the processes in this part of the world. The Far East, whose area exceeds a third of Russia's total territory, has great potential, however, its realization is hampered by a number of obstacles. Hence, the discussion focused on the region's problems and its competitive advantages, as well as on the ways to forge close cooperation of Russia, Republic of Korea and China to implement the current program of the Far East development.
