On April 24, 2026, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and the Asian Institute of Eco-civilization, Research, and Development (AIERD, Pakistan) held a roundtable titled “The Middle East Crisis: Global and Regional Implications.”

Experts from Russia and Pakistan exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East, assessed its impact on regional security in Eurasia, and discussed the consequences of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz for the global economy and energy markets. Particular attention was given to the role of multilateral institutions such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS in the context of the Iran crisis.

Opening remarks were delivered by Shakil Ahmed Ramay, Founder of AIERD.

From the Russian side, presentations were made by Alexander Maryasov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Iran (2001–2005); Pyotr Topychkanov, Head of the Sector for New Challenges in South and Southeast Asia at IMEMO; Ruslan Mamedov, Academic Supervisor of the Primakov Center for Foreign Policy Cooperation and Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences; and Marcel Salikhov, President of the Institute of Energy and Finance.

The Pakistani perspective was presented by Abid Latif Khan, President of AIERD; Ahmad Saeed, former President of the National Institute of Maritime Affairs; Ashfaq Hasan Khan, Director General of the Institute of Policy Studies at the National University of Sciences and Technology; and Moin-ul-Haq, Ambassador of Pakistan to China (2020–2023).

The discussion was summarized by RIAC Director General Ivan Timofeev.

Also in attendance were Gleb Gryzlov, Program Manager at RIAC, and RIAC Program Assistants Alexey Kashin and Anna Korzun.
