Project: Russia and Pakistan: Approaches to Gulf Security
Project goals: analyze the bilateral relations between Russia and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in the context of their regional policy in the Persian Gulf. Russia and Pakistan, having trusting relationships with all key actors in the region, advocate for de-escalation in the Gulf. As members of the SCO, Moscow and Islamabad have significant potential as intermediaries between conflicting parties. This is especially important in promotion of inclusiveness in the regional architecture of the system of international relations and in reducing tensions in general.
Persisting high degree of tension in the region requires a comprehensive study of factors and risks in State-to-State relations. The practical implementation of mutually beneficial cooperation between the two powers needs theoretical understanding of regional processes, search for causality, and development of an optimal strategy for action for both sides. The recommendations, prepared within the project, will help to lay out the prospects for further cooperation between Russia and Pakistan in bilateral relations and in reducing international tension in the region.
The project aims at developing policy briefs both in the interests of State structures of the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, as well as of the expert community interested in modern international relations in the Gulf region.
