On July 17, RIAC and Franco-Russian think tank l’Observatoire held workshop “Russia and France: a New Agenda for the Relationship” with participation of leading experts on the bilateral dialog from RAS Institute for European Studies, RAS Institute of World Economy and International Relations, MGIMO-University, and Higher School of Economics.

The gathering focused on Russian-French political and economic relations, prospects of the two countries in view of the Asia Pacific pivot, Euro-Atlantic security, and interaction in handling regional security problems.

RIAC Director General Andrey Kortunov devoted his opening remarks to RIAC’s aims and project activities, pointing out that European issues and analysis of the Russian-French relations make a key priority.

l’Observatoire Director Arnaud Dubien underlined that the huge potential of the bilateral relationship is still untapped, while the two countries are tied by the fruitful past and promising future.

The participants agreed that currently Moscow and Paris have to construct the dialog in an unfavorable environment due to domestic problems in both countries, the global economic crisis and economic troubles of the European Union. Dr. Kortunov believes that France and Russia should define the most advanced areas of the bilateral relationship and deepen the cooperation.

The workshop marked the first stage of the RIAC project on the Russian-French relations.
