On April 17, 2026, as part of the 26th April International Academic Conference named after Yegor Gaidar at the Higher School of Economics, a roundtable, “Towards a Common Model of Eurasian Security: Synthesizing Concepts of a Regional (Continental) System and a Global Multipolar Order” was held. During the session, experts examined in detail various aspects of building a regional security architecture, approaches to operationalizing the existing concept, and the positions of key actors regarding regional processes in Eurasia.

During the session, experts examined in detail various aspects of building a regional security architecture, approaches to operationalizing the existing concept, and the positions of key actors regarding regional processes in Eurasia.
Presentations at the roundtable were delivered by RIAC Director General Ivan Timofeev; Timofey Bordachev, Academic Supervisor of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at HSE and a member of RIAC; Ivan Safranchuk, Leading Research Fellow at the Institute for International Studies of MGIMO University; Alexander Korolev, Deputy Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies at HSE; Yulia Melnikova, Head of the Asia and Eurasia Program at RIAC; Alexandra Perminova, Acting Head of the Center for Central Asian Studies at the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Ivan Shchedrov, Junior Research Fellow at the Center for the Indo-Pacific Region at IMEMO; and Erazh Boev, Director of the Center for Oriental Studies at the Nizhny Novgorod State Linguistic University. The discussion was moderated by Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Russia in Global Affairs and a member of the RIAC Presidium.
In his remarks, Ivan Timofeev emphasized that at the current stage it is essential to operationalize existing ideas, develop mechanisms for addressing concrete problems, and scale up successful practices of bilateral cooperation.
In her presentation on the European Union’s policy in Central Asia, Yulia Melnikova highlighted the role of “significant others” in shaping and implementing the regional strategy of an integration bloc, noting that this role is now shifting from Russia to China.
The presentations by Ivan Safranchuk, Alexander Korolev, Yulia Melnikova, and Alexandra Perminova at the roundtable were prepared within the framework of Russian Science Foundation Grant No. 25-78-10133, “The Formation of the Eurasian Macro-Region in the Context of the Divergent Impact of Global and Regional Processes on the Foreign Policy Strategies of Eurasian States.”
