On July 17, 2014, the Russian International Affairs Council hosted an expert meeting with representatives of Indonesian Foreign Ministry and Embassy in Moscow with participation of RIAC Director General Andrey Kortunov and Deputy Program Director Timur Makhmutov, Endang Sri Agustini, Deputy Director of Indonesian Foreign Ministry Center for Policy Analysis and Development on American and European Regions; Adella Virosa, officer of the Eastern and Central European Section; and Visnu Broto, Third Secretary of the Protocol and Consular Section; as well as Russian experts, among them Viktor Sumsky, Director of ASEAN Center at MGIMO and Sergey Utkin, Head of Department of Strategic Assessment at RAS Center for Situation Analysis.

The debaters focused on Russia’s attitude to the EU and NATO expansion, impact of the Ukraine crisis on global politics, and the changing nature of international relations. Indonesian guests were also interested in Russian assessments of the EU integration prospects. In fact, advancement of ASEAN should imply the use the European Union practices. Although geographically far apart, the two regions are definitely interdependent since the crises reciprocally affect both.

In conclusion, the participants underlined the significance of expert-level contacts and interaction of Russian and Indonesian analysts engaged in the same-type studies. RIAC plans to expand cooperation with Indonesian partners within its Asia-Pacific project and invite foreign scholars to take part in research projects.
