On March 5, RIAC’s Program Director Ivan Timofeyev, Deputy Program Director Timur Makhmutov and Internet Projects’ Manager Alexander Teslya received Senior Vice President Bruce McConnell and Director of Moscow Office Vladimir Ivanov of the East-West Institute.
The meeting participants discussed several issues of mutual interest, as the East-West Institute is preparing documents on extremism in Syria, international development assistance for high social-risk countries, and drug trafficking from Afghanistan.
Much attention was given to the research and approaches to development of cyberspace strategies with the focus on the causes for its fragmentation, i.e. protectionism in trade, content control, collection and processing of information using network tools. The sides came to a conclusion that cyber security is a matter of special concern and proposed a joint study of the Internet impact on strategic stability and intensity of business processes, so that it could become a priority to set off bilateral cooperation.
