On March 13, 2014 RIAC held a working meeting “The Islamic Factor in Contemporary World Politics” opened by RIAC President Igor Ivanov, RIAC Director General Andrey Kortunov and Director of MGIMO Center for Partnership of Civilizations Veniamin Popov. The event was attended by analysts from MGIMO-University, RAS Institute for Oriental Studies, Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, Higher School of Economics, Moscow State University and other think tanks.

The event was attended by analysts from MGIMO-University, RAS Institute for Oriental Studies, Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, Higher School of Economics, Moscow State University and other think tanks.
The participants discussed the major aspects of this topic studied in Russia, i.e. the position of Islam, especially of a moderate one, in the Arab World and Southeast Asia; Islamic countries’ approaches to global processes; Russia’s interests in Muslim countries; as well as the opportunities for advancing relations with these states and improving Russia’s image in the Islamic community.
The participants of the discussion underlined the importance of the subject and expressed their readiness continue working in this direction. Besides, RIAC is planning to organize more expert meetings and prepare research papers on political Islam.
