The Russian International Affairs Council in conjunction with the independent international organization Oxfam conducted, on 15 November 2012, a round table conference, “Impact of Climate Change on Food Security”. The meeting was opened by RIAC Program Director Ivan Timofeyev and Head of the Oxfam Office in Russia Dmitri Medlev. The moderator was Oxfam Russian Program Coordinator Yulia Yevtushok.

The Russian International Affairs Council in conjunction with the independent international organization Oxfam conducted, on 15 November 2012, a round table conference, “Impact of Climate Change on Food Security”. The meeting was opened by RIAC Program Director Ivan Timofeyev and Head of the Oxfam Office in Russia Dmitri Medlev. The moderator was Oxfam Russian Program Coordinator Yulia Yevtushok.

The round table brought together Russian experts, officials of Russia’s Agriculture Ministry, Economic Development Ministry, Agricultural Meteorology Research Institute, Moscow International Relations Institute, the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow University’s Eurasian Center for Food Security, and the non-profit organizations World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace.

Oхfam’s report “Key problems of climatic change impact on agricultural production in the Russian Federation” was presented at the meeting. It had been prepared in conjunction with the Eurasian Center for Food Security.

The agenda included the following key points:

  • Threats for food security in the conditions of climate change: the world’s most vulnerable regions and the climate impact on the global food market;
  • Climate change impact on Russia’s food security. Russia’s contribution to the effort to overcome food security problems at national, regional and global levels;
  • Adjustment by Russia’s food producers to climate change.

The RIAC and Oxfam plan to cooperate in arranging a workshop on “Russia’s Contribution to Development in the Area of Food Security”.
