2015 marks the 125th anniversary of Russian–Mexican relations. In today’s changing world order, traditional cooperation requires new impetus and new content.
On April 14, 2015, IIA "Russia Today" and the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) will host the Roundtable “Russia–Mexico: 125 Years of Diplomatic Relations”.
Moscow and Mexico share a desire to revise the system of international relations towards greater democratization, transparency and fairness. Both countries are interested in strengthening security and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
At the same time, Russia and Mexico have differing opinions on a number of issues, including the events in Ukraine. Nevertheless, common challenges in the form of economic development, migration and the fight against drug trafficking may serve as a solid foundation for bilateral cooperation. Mexico, which did not support the sanctions against Russia, could become an entry point for Russia into Latin American markets, via the Pacific Alliance, for example, as well as into the North American market by way of NAFTA.
How can a new, more efficient foreign policy with regard to Mexico and Latin America be established? What affect will the strained relations between Moscow and the rest have on bilateral Russian–Mexican relations? These and other issues will be at the forefront of RIAC members’ and guests’ discussions at the round table meeting. The authors of the RIAC report Russian–Mexican Relations: Traditional Foundations and the Need for Change will be on hand to offer their opinions and recommendations.
Panellists:
Igor Ivanov, President of the Russian International Affairs Council
Vladimir Davydov, RIAC member, Director of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Institute of Latin America
