On December 7-8, 2015 St. Petersburg hosted the 5th International Forum “The Arctic: the Present and the Future” held under the auspices of the Association of Polar Explorers. Session “Development of International Cooperation in the Arctic”, organized within the framework of the Forum was moderated by RIAC Director General Andrei Kortunov.

Session “Development of International Cooperation in the Arctic”, organized within the framework of the Forum was moderated by RIAC Director General Andrei Kortunov.

Ambassadors and representatives in the Arctic Council from Russia, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the United States shared their insights on the issues of cooperation in the region. All the speakers were unanimous in their assessment of the Arctic as a unique region that enjoyed effective development of cooperation among littoral countries, had prerequisites for the full application of the provisions of international legal instruments and took into consideration historical and cultural peculiarities of relations among the indigenous peoples.

A particular emphasis was placed on attracting young people to the study of the Arctic and to their participation in decision-making on the region’s management.

On the sidelines of the forum RIAC Director General Andrei Kortunov and Deputy Program Director Timur Makhmutov held a series of meetings with representatives of Russian government agencies, think tanks and universities on the issues of further cooperation in the Arctic sphere.
