On April 23, 2012 Russian International Affairs Council held the workshop “Russia-Japan: opportunities, threats and prospects”.

Among the issues put on the agenda of the workshop were: Japanese dimension of the Russian Foreign Policy Strategy, prospects of the territorial dispute resolution and a peace treaty conclusion, efficiency of public and parliamentary diplomacy in promoting constructive Russian-Japanese relations, Russian and Japanese societies’ mutual perception, Russia’s and Japan’s role in shaping of the APEC Summits’ agenda, cooperation on strengthening security in Asia-Pacific region, etc.

On April 23, 2012 Russian International Affairs Council held the workshop “Russia-Japan: opportunities, threats and prospects”. The event hosted as participants A. Panov, Professor of the Diplomacy department, S. Chugrov, Professor of the International Journalism department, D. Streltsov, Head of the Oriental Studies department – all from MGIMO University with Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and their colleagues from the Center of Japanese Studies of the RAS Institute of Far Eastern Studies V. Kistanov, Head of the Center, V. Pavlyatenko, leading research fellow, V. Kuzminkov, senior research fellow and O. Kazakov, research fellow. I. Timofeev, RIAC’s Program Director, inaugurated the meeting of experts.

Among the issues put on the agenda of the workshop were: Japanese dimension of the Russian Foreign Policy Strategy, prospects of the territorial dispute resolution and a peace treaty conclusion, efficiency of public and parliamentary diplomacy in promoting constructive Russian-Japanese relations, Russian and Japanese societies’ mutual perception, Russia’s and Japan’s role in shaping of the APEC Summits’ agenda, cooperation on strengthening security in Asia-Pacific region, etc. Experts also discussed the possibility of joint Russian-Japanese economic projects and the influence of energy factor on bilateral relations. Special attention was given to the issue of the academic ties development and joint scientific and educational projects.
