On June 18, 2019, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF Russia) held a round table on the development of international cooperation in Arctic marine space management. The following topics were covered during the meeting:
— prospects for joint projects in the framework of the Arctic Council regarding the management of the central part of the Arctic Ocean;
— obtained results, current activities, and plans for the future of the Arctic Council on preservation and management of marine space in the Arctic;
— approaches to marine space management and regulations on certain marine activities in the Arctic outside the Arctic Council projects;
— options for the formation of a regional mechanism (mechanisms) in the Arctic for integrated marine environmental management — as suggested by the experts.
The discussion was attended by leading Russian and foreign experts, representatives of environmental organizations, scientific and industrial institutions, diplomatic missions.
The discussion showed the need for further development of possibilities of the Arctic Council to improve international cooperation in the region, to strengthen the legal framework for activities in the Arctic, and to conduct comprehensive research covering various areas of knowledge.
