Potential Risks for National and International Food Security”.
On March 5, 2013 the Russian International Affairs Council in cooperation with the independent international organization Oxfam held a roundtable discussion on “Impact of Climate Change on Grain Production: Economic Assessment of Potential Damage until 2050. Potential Risks for National and International Food Security”.
The meeting was opened by Ivan Timofeev, RIAC program director, and head of the Oxfam office in Russia Dmitri Medlev. Yulia Yevtushok, Oxfam’s Russian program coordinator, moderated the meeting.
The participants of the round table were Russian experts, officials of Russian Economic Development Ministry, Ministry for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters, All-Russian Research Institute of Agricultural Meteorology, the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow University, Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, Russian Grain Union, Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
The following reports were presented at the meeting:
- “Economic Impact of Climate Change on Russia’s Agriculture: National and Regional Issues” prepared by G.V.Safonov, Director of Centre for Environmental Economics and Natural Resources, Higher School of Economics.
- “Assessment of Macroeconomic Consequences of Climate Change in the Territory of the Russian Federation for the Period up to 2030 and Onwards” prepared by M.A.Sall, FSBI “MGO” leading research scientist.
The following key subjects were discussed:
- Impact of climate change on Russia’s export potential;
- Economic assessment of adaptation of agriculture to climate change through 2050.
Cooperation between RIAC and Oxfam envisages further development of measures aimed at strengthening Russia’s food security.
