On July 11, RIAC hosted a closed meeting on security challenges and prospects for cooperation between Russia and the EU in the Middle East and North Africa.
The event was opened by Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, and Fredrik Wesslau, Director of the Wider Europe Programme at ECFR.
The experts discussed regional actors’ stances in the Middle East conflicts, as well as Russian and European Union’s attitudes to the Syrian, Libyan, and Yemeni crises. European and Russian representatives assessed current processes and possible developments in the Middle East. The experts also discussed possible vectors of cooperation in the region.

The meeting was moderated by Timur Makhmutov, RIAC Deputy Director of Programs.
From the Russian side, Alexander Rudakov, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Andrey Baklanov, Advisor to the Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council, presented their reports. ECFR was represented by Mattia Toaldo and Hugh Lovatt, Policy Fellows for ECFR's Middle East & North Africa Programme.

The participants discussed prospects and areas of future cooperation.
