On September 18, 2025, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations (COMEXI) co-hosted a roundtable titled "Russia-Mexico Relations: A View from Moscow and Mexico City".

The event was opened with welcoming remarks by RIAC President Igor Ivanov and COMEXI Advisor, Member of the Board of Directors and Coordinator of the Russia Study Group, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico, Rubén Beltrán.

The speakers included:

  • Dmitry Rozental, Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Rainer Matos, Member of the COMEXI Russia Study Group, Scholar in Russian Studies;
  • Victor Heifetz, Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Latinskaya Amerika’’, Professor at St. Petersburg State University, and Chief Researcher at the Institute of Latin American Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Alejandra Lopez de Alba, Deputy Director and Member of the COMEXI Russia Study Group;
  • Ekaterina Kosevich, Leading Research Fellow at the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies, National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE), and Associate Professor at the HSE Department of International Relations;
  • Balvanera Bruno, Member of the COMEXI Russia Study Group, former staff member of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development;
  • Tatyana Rusakova, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The session was moderated by RIAC Program Coordinator Alexandra Terzi.

During the roundtable, the experts discussed the current state of Russian-Mexican relations, the international political context, factors constraining the development of bilateral ties, as well as trade, economic, investment and cultural cooperation. The discussion also covered prospects for future relations, the positions of Moscow and Mexico City, the role of expert communities and opportunities for further collaboration between RIAC and COMEXI.
