On June 4, Russian International Affairs Council held working conference "Prospects for Harmonization of the Environmental Law of the Arctic Council States" to continue a series of events within preparation of the annual report on international cooperation in the Arctic Region.

On June 4, Russian International Affairs Council held working conference "Prospects for Harmonization of the Environmental Law of the Arctic Council States" to continue a series of events within preparation of the annual report on international cooperation in the Arctic Region.

Opened by RIAC Deputy Program Director Timur Makhmutov and moderated by Andrey Zagorsky, Head of Nonproliferation and Arms Control Sector at RAS Institute of World Economy and International Relations, the event was also participated by representatives of Russian Foreign Ministry, the WWF in Russia, Russian Research Institute for Fisheries and Oceanography, RAS Institute for European Studies, RAS Institute of World Economy and International Relations, and MGIMO-University.

The discussion focused on upgrading of Russia's environmental law for the Arctic, cooperation opportunities within the Arctic Council, and assessment of the Arctic Council's legally binding Agreement on Cooperation on Marine Oil Pollution Preparedness and Response in the Arctic.

Ideas and proposals advanced at the meeting will be used for finalization of appropriate portions of the future Arctic cooperation report.
