The United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019 at 11 pm UK time, a little less than three years after the Brexit referendum on 23 June 2016, when 51.9 percent of those who voted supported the withdrawal. The British society and political elite remain divided on the issue. Prime Minister Theresa May failed to gain a majority in Parliament for the Withdrawal Agreement, which the British government and the EU 27 reached in painstaking negotiations between June 2017 and November 2018.
