On November 10, 2020 Gleb Ivashentsov, Vice President of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia took part in the Pathfinder Indian Ocean Security Conference, organized by the Sri Lankan think-tank the Pathfinder Foundation.

The 3-day conference focuses on security and governance issues in the Indian Ocean Region, including strategic dynamics, connectivity possibilities and ideological differences, influencing the intra-regional power balance.

Ambassador Ivashentsov spoke during the first session “Maritime Security and Freedom of Navigation” alongside with Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chairman of the National Maritime Foundation, Indian maritime think-tank, and Ms Nilanthi Samaranayake, Research Program Director at the CNA, a nonprofit American research and analysis organization. The discussion was moderated by Professor C. Raja Mohan, Director of the Institute of South Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore.

The experts presented their views on the security issues in the region. Ambassador Ivashentsov noted that the Russian Maritime Doctrine sees the Indian Ocean as one of regional priorities. He stressed the importance of prevention of the escalation in the region and highlighted that the Indian Ocean needs a new international cooperation architecture on the non-bloc basis to ensure the balance between various political, economic and military powers.
