On June 4, 2020 at 5:00PM Moscow timezone (GMT+3), Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), in partnership with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (USA), will hold a virtual teleconference to make a presentation of the article Implementing Marine Management in the Arctic Ocean.

The authors of the report, Dr. Andrei Zagorsky, Head of the Department for Disarmament and Conflict Resolution Studies at RAS IMEMO, and David Bolton, Senior Fellow, Polar Institute, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, former Ambassador and Deputy Secretary of State for Oceans and Fisheries, will share their vision on how to build a more efficient marine resource management system in the central part of the Arctic Ocean.

The report reviews a wide range of initiatives to strengthen ocean conservation and governance. The Arctic Council has launched numerous projects and programs to address issues related to the state of the Arctic Ocean. At the same time, a closer analysis of the situation shows that the mechanisms created may not be enough to meet the growing needs of the region. The Arctic region today faces serious geopolitical, socioeconomic, and environmental challenges. The dramatic reduction in Arctic sea ice and the other profound changes brought on by a warming climate have already led to serious consequences. While these changes are making the Arctic Ocean more accessible for a range of human activities, they are also disrupting marine ecosystems and threatening the well-being of Arctic residents whose lives and livelihoods depend on a healthy Arctic Ocean.

Moderator:

Dr. Michael Sfraga, Director, Polar Institute, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

Opening Remarks:

Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs
