Project: Russia and the South Caucasus
RIAC’s Russia in the South Caucasus Project aims to identify and analyze key opportunities for Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia to cooperate in the current international environment. The goal of this project is to examine trade and economic cooperation in the South Caucasus, analyze trust-building methods to ensure lasting peace in the region, and review regional bilateral cooperation in establishing global and regional transport and logistics communications for potential transport corridors. Additionally, the project aims to generate recommendations for the development of Russian-Azerbaijani and Russian-Armenian cooperation in high priority areas.
The South Caucasus has traditionally been one of the most strategically important regions for Russia. Russia and the other countries of the region are linked by their shared history, close spiritual and cultural affinity, as well as strong and friendly people-to-people ties. Moscow remains committed to the existing and emerging multilateral regional formats, such as the International Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in the South Caucasus and the “3+3” Consultative Regional Platform. Traditionally, special attention has been paid to the maintenance of regional security.
