An armed conflict broke out in 1999 on the northern part of the Line of Control, in the Kargil sector: it was started by Pakistan but ended in defeat. In 2001–2002 the two neighbours, which by that time had acquired nuclear weapons, were close to all-out conflict, but it was averted. A process of improving relations and seeking ways of settling the Kashmir conflict began in 2003.
