As global warming shrinks the polar ice caps and leaves Arctic waters open for longer stretches, the world is intensifying its focus on opportunities in the Arctic. The open waters are attracting the development of raw materials, tourism, fishing etc, thus establishing new ship traffic and creating additional demands.
The Arctic is still in its initial stages with regards to fulfilling its huge potential, and a lot of investments are needed to ensure that this is accomplished. However, the fall in the prices of oil & gas remains a challenge, along with sanctions, climate change and community perspective. Logistical obstacles and the lack of a supply chain are also key challenges halting operations in the region.
The booming activities in the Arctic are all very well but the fact remains that the area does not have the adequate experience or know-how to support it. The current infrastructure in place is not sufficient should the arctic prove to be as successful as everyone hopes or predictions suggest. In order to capitalize on the continued increase in traffic and development, it is essential that investments in vessels, marine navigation and inland infrastructure are made.
