Worked as Dean of the History and Philology Faculty of the Magadan Pedagogical University. Researcher of the Institute of General History of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Scientific secretary of the History Department of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Deputy Director of the Institute of Ethnography. Minister of Nationalities of the Russian Federation (1992).

Since 1989, Director of the RAS Miklukho-Maklai Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology.

Vice-President of the International union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. President of the Russian Association of Anthropologists and Ethnologists. Member of the RF Civic Chamber, Chairman of the Commission on Tolerance and Freedom of Conscience.

Author of academic papers and books.

Academic focus: ethnic theory; ethnic processes in the post-Soviet region; Native Americans.

Laureate of the RF State Award in the Field of Science and Technology.

Recipient of state awards.
