on the problems of migration in the modern world. At the conference, Russian and international experts discussed the numerous aspects of migration and the impact it has on governments. Particular attention was paid to the ongoing migrant crisis in the European Union.

... the place of migration policy in Russia's general modernization strategy for decades to come. The times of readily available migration resources are over for us, while the need for such resources, in contrast, is growing. Therefore, the emphasis in Russian migration policy should probably be transferred from the administrative mechanisms of regulating migration flows (the Ministry of the Interior can cope with this perfectly well) to finding solutions to problems of migrants’ adaptation and integration ...

Third, the Ukraine crisis has visibly aggravated the position of Ukrainians working in Russia. Most have families back home but they are choosing to stay away fearing a loss of their jobs, with many practically being trapped. If Russian migration law fails to provide them with special status, they may go underground and illegal. Many would be happy to follow the simplified citizenship procedure should Russia grant the opportunity.

Migration from Mexico to the United States skyrocketed in the 1970s, while inflows into Russia stepped up in the 1990s and 2010s. The differences in timing allow us to use Mexico as a case study to analyze possible scenarios for the future of the migration ...

Migration to cities from settlements is a trend that emerged sometime in the early 20th century, and not just in Russia but in other countries as well. In the North, Siberia, and the Far East there are about 40 different indigenous peoples with total population of about 250,000. More than a half of them live in cities. The process is irreversible, just like urbanization ...
