In December 1993 the Luxembourg Institute for European and International Studies organized a conference on the Vitality of Britain, with some 60 participants, two-thirds of them from Britain. The conference was organized in the context of the ‘Vitality of Nations’ project, which is a multidisciplinary, multinational and long-term research project of the Institute; some 15 conferences have been organized so far in this context, either on specific countries or on various aspects of the rise and decline of nations. During two days we had exciting discussions which gave a good idea of contemporary British society - in political, economic, social and cultural terms. This book represents the transcript of discussions that even three years later at the conference have lost none of their interest and relevance.
