This book was written by two staff members at the Natural Resources Defense Council because no comprehensive source book on New York City's environmental issues existed. Entailing three years of research, some 100 interviews, detailed review of government reports, and numerous filings of freedom of information requests for unpublished data, this "ride through New York City's environmental battle grounds" takes us from Fresh Kills, the world's largest landfill, to Trump City, the "think big" development project, via such landmarks as R2B2, the model recycling program, and 718-THE-DEEP, the Parks Department's telephone hotline for beach and swimming conditions. Advice is also offered on what New Yorkers can do to help the cause. While intended for The Big Apple, the book provides useful parallels for citizen action in other cities.
