This volume is a collection of papers that were written for and read on the discussion meetings in English or Russian once a week in Tokyo, Kyoto and Sapporo, inviting foreign lectures specialized in topics that are related to the topic – “Russia and Asia”.

We organized in the autumn of 2004 a study team called “Russia and Asia: Toward the New Partnership between Russia and Japan in Asia”. The team members: Masamori Sase, Shigeki Hakamada, Akira Ishii, Akihiro Iwashita, Hiroshi Kimura, Naoki Amano, Masashi Anno, Yasuhito Ide, Eiko Tomiyama, Yukiko Hama, Takeshi Yuasa and Akiko Yoshioka.

In order to cover almost all relevant countries in Asia, we have requested the inclusion of paper by a specialist outside our team: Professor Leszek Buszynski from the International University of Japan (Niigata).
