The exiting story of Ontario’s natural resources, is described by Premier John Roberts, in his foreword to the book, as “much more than a history of one of the Departments of the Government of the Province of Ontario; it is a vital component of the history of Ontario”, reaching back nearly 200 years to the days of the first surveyor General of Upper Canada in 1794. The book describes the impact made by a civilized people upon the primitive forest that originally covered the land, and the development of its natural resources under public administration from an early state of confusion and waste down to the modern era of conservation and scientific management.

The book 25 chapters cover such topics as the surveying and settlement of the land; the exploration of northern Ontario; the exploration and regulations of timber; the creation of the first successful Northern American system of forest protection; the start of the provincial air service; the rise of forestry; the growth of the modern pulp and paper industry; the founding of Algonquin Park and subsequent expansion of provincial parks; the conversation and management of wildlife; the system of “cropping” and harvesting present-day forests; land planning for multiple use and the work of research in forestry, fisheries and wildlife
