Graduated from the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). RAS Corresponding Member. Doctor of Sciences (History).

Taught history at a secondary school, worked at the Voprosy istorii journal. Editor-in-chief of the Nauka publishing house. Editor-in-chief of the USSR State Committee on Publishing.

From 1993 to 2010, Director of the RAS Institute of Russian History.

Author of over 300 academic papers; author of school textbooks on the history of Russia, and of textbooks for universities.

Academic interests: history of diplomacy, foreign policy, ideology and culture of Ancient Russia; Russian and foreign historiography on the history of Russia; social and economic relations in the Russian State in the 17th century.

Member of the Russian Union of Writers.

Recipient of state awards.
