Graduated from the Minsk Higher Engineering Anti-Aircraft Rocket School of Air Defense; Frunze Military Academy; General Staff Academy. Full Member of the Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Sciences, Doctor of Sciences (Technology).

For over 20 years, worked at the Central Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR and then the Russian Federation, first as an operative and later as a commanding officer.

From 1997 to 2009, Head of the Central Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the General Staff of the Russian Federation Armed Forces.

At various times, member of the Interdisciplinary Coordinating Council for Military-Technical Cooperation with Foreign States, member of the Supervisory Council Observing the Activities of Rosvooruzhenie and Promexport; member of the Presidential Committee for Military-Technical Cooperation with Foreign States.

Author of academic papers on informational support for decision-making. Supervisor of research on trends in the development of information systems and applications.
