1976–1991: lecturer, senior lecturer, senior research associate and associate professor at the Moscow State University Faculty of Economics.

1991–present: served in various governmental and non-governmental positions: Expert Aide to the President of the Soviet Union; Deputy Chairman of the State Committee on Interstate Relations; First Deputy Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation; Acting Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation; First Deputy Chairman of the Board of Imperial Bank; Member of the Gazprom Management Committee; Chairman of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation; Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee. 

2001–2008: Deputy Chairman of the Board at Unified Energy System of Russia, Member of the Board at Unified Energy System of Russia.

2005–2008: also worked as the Financial Director of Unified Energy System of Russia.

 

October 1, 2008–present: Member of the Board of Directors at VTB Capital.
