These movements were defined by Western observers as color revolutions and interpreted as democratic breakthroughs, capable of bringing about a political transformation in post-Soviet countries....

AbstractSince the breakup of Yugoslavia and the USSR, the "colour revolutions" and the "Arab Spring" might have contributed to trivialize the events of February 2014 in Kiev, Ukraine. It would nevertheless, be neglecting the importance of geopolitical factors involved in the Euromaidan and largely explaining the consequences of this popular revolt that led to a coup. This would also require disregarding history and the realist ...

He may use the coming Zapad [West] maneuvers to launch a military intervention with his Little Green Men in Belorussia as he did in Crimea and then in eastern Ukraine three years ago. We predicted the invasion of the Crimea a day before it happened, and U.S. intelligence has already learned some of the Little Green Men are among Russian elite forces assembled at the Russian-Belorussian borders. Ominously, Latvia ...

Kerry’s talks failed because the Russians were never serious about them, much like previous negotiations on both Syria and Ukraine had repeatedly failed. After some two weeks of these Russian war crimes, the ...

My Russian friends used to annoy me when they insisted I could not understand Russia if I knew only Moscow and St. Petersburg. So I began to visit other Russian cities and surrounding countryside--Perm, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Izhevsk, Chelyabinsk, Kazan, Ufa, Krasnodar, Vladimir-Suzdal, Tuapse. My conclusion? My friends were right. These cities are not Moscow or St. Petersburg. But then, Oklahoma City, Provo Utah, Flint Michigan, and Columbus Ohio are not New York City or Washington D.C.

This NATO flotilla would primarily rely on NATO Black Sea members naval capabilities (i.e. Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey), but would not be restricted to them, with prospects to join already offered to Ukraine and Georgia, while some Western navies would be contributing as well (in particular the US, Italian and German). Taking into account that all Black Sea maritime countries have, at best, difficult relations with Russia, Romania’s proposal ...

The US space agency has forked out $490m for six seats for its astronauts to get to the ISS on board one of the Russian Federal Space Agency's (Roscosmos) Soyuz spacecraft. Nasa's space shuttles were stopped in 2011 as the organisation set about sending its astronauts to the ISS on board privately developed spacecrafts like SpaceX. However, a shortfall in funding from the US Congress has meant the space agency is down about a billion dollars on what it requested since 2011. As a result, the first...

One such dilemma currently facing civilians in rebel-held regions of southeastern Ukraine is that of economic insecurity via diminished access to financial resources. Make no mistake, though, the problems between Russia and America are serious and affect a whole host of major issues around the world from wars in Syria and Ukraine to global energy distribution, access, and prices, to space exploration and militarization, just to name a few.
Perhaps this is understandable, given the nature of the history of the most serious, dangerous rivalry the world has ever seen. Sparta ...
