“What happened is a turning point and I do hope that the EU finally will stand up to what is going on,” wrote a Dutch friend who prefers to remain anonymous. “Trade is important as well as energy security, but in the end it is not the most important. I hope this was a wakeup call and Europe will finally work to become independent from Russian energy.”

“The whole country is in shock,” she continued.  “ There were 193 Dutch people who lost their lives; among the victims there were approx. 80 younger than 18 and 23 younger than 12. What angers me most at this point is the respectless way the bodies and body parts are handled. Bodies are shown by rebels and the personal belongings are pillaged. The bodies have been laying in the sun for almost three days now. The whole scene has been interfered with and investigators are not allowed.”

“It seems that they removed some bodies today but nobody knows where they are. It is just so barbaric. You can imagine how awful this is for the relatives; not only they lost their loved ones, but they have to watch this.

Our PM gave a press conference yesterday, minutes after he made a call to Putin. Our PM normally is a very diplomatic and calm person, but I have never seen him so angry as yesterday. He asked Putin to use his influence to make it possible that the bodies could be repatriated and investigators were allowed to the scene. The answer must not have been what he wanted to hear. Our PM said he told Putin that this was his last chance to show that he meant well with the world. He furthermore told him that a refusal to cooperate would indicate who was responsible for this tragedy.”
