On March 11, 2015, RAS Institute of Europe (IE) hosted presentation of the working paper “The Current State of Russia-United Kingdom Relations” issued by RIAC under its project “A New Agenda for Russia-United Kingdom Relations”.

The event was opened by the IE Director Alexei Gromyko, a RIAC member, who expressed his gratitude to RIAC for the publication that had been conceived long ago and conceptually developed to every detail. Dr. Gromyko also expanded on the current political environment in Great Britain on the eve of the general election and expressed hope that relations between Moscow and London will survive and develop despite the current international troubles.

Alan Thompson, Russia Director of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce, spoke on the effects of the sanctions and Russia’s economic crisis on bilateral cooperation on the SME level, stressing that openness to dialogue now seems to be the matter of paramount importance.

Head of the IE Center for British Studies Elena Anayeva emphasized that the paper is the second joint effort of her institute and RIAC, the first one being the 2014 collective monograph “Britain’s Dilemmas: In Search of Ways for Development”, in which leading Russian experts presented their research on British domestic and foreign policies.

Moderated by Vladislav Belov, Head of the IE Center for German Studies, the subsequent discussion of political and economic aspects of the Russian-British relations was supported by Head of the IE Documentation Center Yuri Borko, IMEMO Chief Researcher Efim Hesin, Deputy Director of the MFA Second European Department Karen Malayan, Head of the IE Center for Party and Political Studies Vladimir Schweitzer, Senior Researcher at the IE Lyudmila Bobynina, and Head of the IE Center for French Studies Yuri Rubinsky.

Summarizing the debate, RIAC Media and Government Relations Manager Anton Tsvetov also presented RIAC’s new reader titled “Modern Science on International Relations Abroad.”
