Future Relations between Russia and South Korea Discussed at RIAC

On October 6, 2015, Russian International Affairs Council, the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and Carnegie Moscow Center held roundtable "The Rise of Eurasia and Future Russian-South Korean Cooperation" with assistance of the ROK Embassy to Moscow. Timed to the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and the Republic of Korea, the event offered a series of reports and presentations by diplomats, government officials, experts, academics, businessmen and journalists of the two countries.

On October 6, 2015, Russian International Affairs Council, the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and Carnegie Moscow Center held roundtable "The Rise of Eurasia and Future Russian-South Korean Cooperation" with assistance of the ROK Embassy to Moscow. Timed to the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and the Republic of Korea, the event offered a series of reports and presentations by diplomats, government officials, experts, academics, businessmen and journalists of the two countries.
The roundtable was opened by RIAC Program Director Ivan Timofeyev, KIEP Vice President at Department of Europe, Americas and Eurasia Jae-Young Lee and Alexander Gabuev, Chair of Russia in the Asia-Pacific Program at Carnegie Moscow Center. The audience was welcomed by South Korean Ambassador to Moscow Park Ro-byug and Deputy Director of the First Asia Department at Russian Foreign Ministry Igor Sagitov.
The roundtable contained three sessions:
- Common interests and challenges in geopolitics and geo-economics.
- Future relations between Russia and the ROK and prospects for trilateral cooperation.
- Opportunities for integration projects in Eurasia.
The discussants focused on political and economic aspects of bilateral relations between Russia and South Korea, security threats in East Asia, culture and space cooperation, objectives for regional cooperation and use of the Northern Sea Route. Special attention was given to regional integration initiatives, i.e. One Belt, One Way concept and Trans-Pacific Partnership.
The debates were moderated by Mr. Gabuev, Professor-Chairman of Chung-Ang University Wong Dong Cho, and RIAC Deputy Program Director Timur Makhmutov.
In concluding remarks, the roundtable organizers found the discussion fruitful and suggested placing such gatherings on a regular basis.
