Second Seminar within Russian-British RIAC and RUSI Project on Security Issues

On November 7–8, 2018, Russian International Affairs Council hosted the second seminar of the third cycle of the Russian-British bilateral project on security issues. The project has been implemented since the end of 2016 in partnership with the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI).
Four workshops will be held within the framework of the third cycle of the project to analyze issues in the area of arms control and confidence building measures, combating terrorism and violent extremism, cooperation on cyber security issues and interaction of the two countries on crisis management in North Africa and the Middle East and to develop appropriate recommendations.
The second seminar of the Russian-British project focused on the analysis of the positions of the parties in the fight against terrorism and organized crime, sharing experience, and developing recommendations.
The first day of the seminar concentrated on the methods for combating transnational organized crime in Russia and the UK, the activities of the police and relevant agencies from both sides in the fight against organized gangs, human trafficking, and drug trafficking.
The second day of the seminar focused on the analysis of the issues of the return of militants from Syria, Iraq, the radicalization of society, and the growth of extremism. Both Russian and British approaches were considered. The issues of combating economic crimes and the role of public-private partnerships in preventing and combating organized crime in the financial sphere were also discussed.
The British side was represented by RUSI leadership and experts, independent experts from the National Crime Agency, representatives from The Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime, and specialists in financial crime and corruption (Dunchurch Compliance Solutions). The Russian side was represented by RIAC experts, researchers from academic institutions and universities.
The third seminar of the third cycle of the project will be held in London in early 2019 and will be devoted to the policy of Russia and the United Kingdom in the Middle East region.
