Short version

On November 26, 2025, the Georgy Mirsky Middle East Seminar titled “Yemen in the Context of Regional Transformation in the Middle East” was held at the IMEMO RAS. Opening remarks were delivered by Vitaly Naumkin, President of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS and Vice President of the RIAC, and by Irina Zvyagelskaya, Head of the Center for the Middle East Studies at IMEMO RAS and RIAC member.

During the discussion, experts examined the key causes and drivers of the Yemeni crisis, its evolution and stages of development, as well as the role of external actors. Particular attention was paid to the condition of state institutions, the humanitarian situation, and potential frameworks for political settlement.

The keynote presentation was given by Sergey Serebrov, Senior Researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS. The seminar also included a co-presentation by Muhammad Al-Afifi, the official representative of the Southern Transitional Council of Yemen in Russia. Nikolay Sukhov, Lead Researcher at the Center for the Middle East Studies at IMEMO RAS, was both co-speaker and moderator of the event.
