RIAC and RUSI Discuss European Security and Arms Control Issues

On February 17, 2021, RIAC completed the 5th cycle of the long-term bilateral Russia-UK security project "A New Agenda for Russia–UK Relations" by holding a Russia-UK expert workshop. The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has been RIAC project partner for 6 years.

The February workshop was devoted to the prospects for cooperation between Russia and the UK in the field of European security and arms control, current state of European security and its dynamics, including the impact of multilateral and security institutions (NATO, OSCE, EU) on the current state of threats and security risks. During the workshop experts exchanged views on the future of arms control in Europe in the light of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) signed between the Russian Federation and the United States.

The February workshop was devoted to the prospects for cooperation between Russia and the UK in the field of European security and arms control, current state of European security and its dynamics, including the impact of multilateral and security institutions (NATO, OSCE, EU) on the current state of threats and security risks. During the workshop experts exchanged views on the future of arms control in Europe in the light of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) signed between the Russian Federation and the United States. The workshop also focused on the existing European conventional arms control mechanisms, including the future of the Treaty on Open Skies, confidence and security building measures and the prospects for the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty. A separate session of the workshop was devoted to the regional security priorities of Russia and the UK in the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe region.

Experts from Russia and the UK reported on the strategic priorities and prospects for their countries regarding the changing nature of European security and arms control, which will be included in a policy brief prepared to follow-up the workshop.

The workshop was moderated by Malcolm Chalmers, Deputy Director-General of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), and Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General. The workshop was attended by leading experts on European security and arms control representing the two countries.
