On May 23, 2014 the roundtable “Security Developments in the Asia-Pacific: Russian and Philippine Perspectives” took place in Moscow under the sponsorship of the Embassy of the Philippines in the Russian Federation and the Russian International Affairs Council.
The event was attended by Evan P. Garcia, Undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines, Maria Collinson, Secretary Assistant of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines, Alejandro B. Mosquera, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines to the Russian Federation, Carlos Sorreta, Director of Foreign Service Institute of the Philippines, Ivan Timofeev, Program Director of the Russian International Affairs Council, Victor Sumsky, Head of MGIMO University ASEAN Center, Dmitry Mosyakov, Head of RAS Institute of Oriental Studies Southeast Asia and Oceania Research Center, as well as other diplomats and international affairs experts.
The discussion covered the following key issues:
- Can the current Asia Pacific security system be considered stable?
- Can existing regional mechanisms guarantee security, or is there a need for new levers?
- What are the common interests of Russia and the Philippines in the area of regional security?
- Can economic interaction become the common ground for closer bilateral cooperation?
The roundtable results will be used for a series of analytical articles by Russian and Filipino experts on the RIAC website.
