Impossible to Forget: Why the Memory of the Great Patriotic War is Important for Russians
Topic: "Impossible to Forget: Why the Memory of the Great Patriotic War is Important for Russians".
In this issue, we have gathered articles that contribute to explaining to foreign readers the significance of the Russian tradition of cherishing the memory of ancestors who fought in the war and paying tribute to their sacrifices. Besides the tradition of every family to remember their veterans, there are nationwide initiatives, like the Immortal Regiment movement, the “Train of Victory” or the “Candle of Memory”. There is of course the annual military parade in Red Square on Victory Day, May 9th. There is the whole cultural heritage: novels, poems, sculptures, monuments, films, shows, etc., about the Great Patriotic War and how the people of the Soviet Union fought in it and won. For Russians, the war and the Victory are impossible to forget because the war was unprecedently cruel and the Victory was all-time glorious.
