On March 6, 2020, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a methodological seminar "Practice Oriented Research in the Field of Russia-US and Russian-European Studies". The event was organized as part of a joint project with the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech, and the Hague Center for Strategic Studies.

This project is aimed at creating a discussion platform to involve representatives of the Russian academic community in conducting applied international research jointly with Western colleagues.

The seminar included the presentation of the RuBase project by Stephan De Spiegeleire, Principal Scientist at the Hague Center for Strategic Studies, and Adam Stulberg, Professor at Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech. The session also included a presentation of analysis methods and tools for applied research in the field of international relations and the presentation of a number of studies using quantitative data analysis methods.

In addition, RIAC held a presentation of the study on the US secondary sanctions. Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs, introduced a database of the US secondary sanctions to the seminar participants. He also spoke about the methods and tools used in the analysis of OFAC measures.

The discussion focused on the relevant analysis tools and methods for conducting research in the field of relations between Russia and the USA and EU countries, their advantages and disadvantages, key challenges in relations between countries, positive experience in cooperation and prospects for interaction. Following the meeting, topics and participants in future joint research were identified.

The event was attended by representatives of MGIMO MFA of Russia, Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Higher School of Economics, Russian State University for the Humanities, and Peoples' Friendship University of Russia.
