Russia — New Zealand Expert Discussion on Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific

On September 16, 2019, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) with the support of the Embassy of New Zealand in Moscow held a round table “Regional Development and Security: Russia’s and New Zealand’s Approaches.”

On September 16, 2019, the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) with the support of the Embassy of New Zealand in Moscow held a round table “Regional Development and Security: Russia’s and New Zealand’s Approaches.”
Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs, and Ian Hill, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of New Zealand to Russia, while opening the meeting pointed out that such a discussion between Russia and New Zealand experts on cooperation in the Asia-Pacific is held for the first time in recent history.
From the New Zealand side, the event was attended by David Capie, Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies, Suzannah Jessep, Director of Engagement and Research of the Asia New Zealand Foundation, Jason Young, Director of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre, as well as New Zealand’s diplomats.
On the Russian side, the discussion was joined by representatives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, researchers and professors from MGIMO University, Higher School of Economics and RAS Institute of World Economy and International Relations, as well as RIAC’s staff and experts.
Participants discussed relevant issues between the Asia-Pacific countries and views of Russia and New Zealand on regional security. Particular attention was paid to growing China-US tensions and their possible consequences for regional development. Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs, chaired the meeting.
