Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, Kang Young-pil, the Korea Foundation Executive Vice-President, opened the Forum. Lee Seok-bae, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to the Russian Federation, delivered a congratulatory speech, while Gleb Ivashentsov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation, RIAC Vice President, and Alexander Panov, Head of Diplomacy Department at MGIMO University, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation, RIAC Member, made welcome remarks.

The first session focused on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and changes of security order in Northeast Asia. Ko Jae Nam, Professor, Korea National Academy of Diplomacy, moderated the discussion. Georgy Toloraya, Executive Director, Russian National Committee on BRICS Research, Director, Asian Strategy Center, Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Hwang Jihwan, Professor, University of Seoul, evaluated prospects for peace process on the Korean Peninsula. Ilya Dyachkov, Associate Professor, MGIMO University, and Jang Se Ho, Research Fellow, Institute for National Security Strategy, summed up the results of the Hanoi Summit and assessed potential outcomes of future negotiations.
The second session of the Forum was devoted to economic cooperation in Eurasia. Yaroslav Lissovolik, Chief Managing Director, Sberbank, Head, Analytical Department of Global Markets, Sberbank Investment Research, RIAC Member, focused on new globalization models in the global economy. Byun Hyunsub, Deputy Director, Economic Cooperation Team, the Presidential Committee on Northern Economic Cooperation, described visions and tasks of Korea’s New Northern Policy. Anastasia Likhacheva, Deputy Dean for Research, Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, Director, Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies, Higher School of Economics, made an emphasis on strategic priorities of the Eurasian integration, and Park Jiwon, Research Fellow, New Northern Policy Team at KOTRA, delivered a speech on digital economy in the context of economic integration in Eurasia. The discussion was managed by Vladimir Petrovsky, Chief Research Fellow, RAS Institute of Far Eastern Studies.
Participants also discussed implications of Russia-US and China-US relations for Russia-Korea cooperation on regional security. Igor Istomin, Associate Professor, MGIMO University, focused on Indo-Pacific Strategy of the US and its meaning for Russia and Korea. Choo Jaewoo, Professor, Kyunghee University, shared his views on US factor in Sino-Russian cooperation on North Korea’s denuclearization. Vladimir Morozov, RIAC Program Manager, spoke on dynamics of US sanctions against Russia and China and their implications for Russia-Korea relations. Lee Sun Woo, Professor, Chonbuk National University, assessed possibility of US-Russia joint efforts for peace on the Korean Peninsula bearing in mind contradictions between the countries. Moderator of the session was Eom Gu Ho, Director, Asia-Pacific Research Center, Hanyang University.
The round table was attended by leading Russian experts in international affairs from MGIMO University, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Higher School of Economics, RAS Institute of Far Eastern Studies, RAS Institute of Oriental Studies, and Russian State University for the Humanities.
At the end of the working day, Kang Young-pil, the Korea Foundation Executive Vice-President, and Gleb Ivashentsov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation, RIAC Vice President, summarized the debates. They noted deep and diverse discussions within the sessions, proactive participation of speakers and panellists. The parties expressed readiness to continue their cooperation in this format in the future involving promising young researchers of the two countries.
