On February 7, 2020, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a round table “International Politics in East Asia and Japan. Prospects for Russia — Japan Cooperation”. The event was organized with the support of the Embassy of Japan in Russia.

On February 7, 2020, Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) held a round table “International Politics in East Asia and Japan. Prospects for Russia — Japan Cooperation”. The event was organized with the support of the Embassy of Japan in Russia.

Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, opened the meeting. He emphasized the importance of the Japanese track in the Council’s work. From the Japanese side, the participants were greeted by Tokuda Shuichi, Minister on Political Affairs, Head of the Political Department, Embassy of Japan in Russia.

Professor Tanaka Akihiko, President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), delivered a lecture “International Politics in East Asia and Japan”. In his speech, Professor Tanaka touched upon a wide range of issues, including Japanese foreign policy under Shinzo Abe, Japan-US relations, the importance of ensuring liberal world order, regional security in East Asia, and the impact of US-China trade war on global economic growth. Dmitry Streltsov, Head of the Department of Asian and African Studies, MGIMO University, emphasized Japan's success in developing strong relations with neighboring states and elaborated on its role in international cooperation. Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs, was a moderator of the discussion.

The round table was attended by experts from MGIMO University, Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IFES RAS), IMEMO RAS, Russian State University for the Humanities, Higher School of Economics, Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISS) and RAS Institute of Oriental Studies. The discussion touched upon topical issues such as the WTO crisis, Russia's role in Asia Pacific, and the possibility of creating a free trade zone between Japan, South Korea, and China.
