On April 10, 2018, RIAC hosted a meeting for a group of Russian experts with Human Rights Watch (HRW) representatives on conditions and principles of post-conflict reconstruction in Syria.

On April 10, 2018, RIAC hosted a meeting for a group of Russian experts with Human Rights Watch (HRW) representatives on conditions and principles of post-conflict reconstruction in Syria.

Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, and Tatiana Lokshina, HRW Russia Program Director, opened the event. Timur Makhmutov, RIAC Deputy Director of Programs, moderated the discussion.

The following issues were discussed in the course of the meeting: the current state of the Syrian crisis, the issues of post-conflict economic reconstruction of the the Syrian Arab Republic, sanctions, the role of regional forces, U.S. strategy and relations between the Arab tribes and Kurds in northeast Syria, the activity of the Russian Centre for the Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in the Syrian Arab Republic, and the prospects/scenarios of the situation development.

HRW was represented by Tatiana Lokshina, HRW Russia Program Director, Lama Fakih, Deputy Director, Middle East and North Africa Division, Sara Kayyali, Syria Researcher, Middle East and North Africa Division, and Vladislav Lobanov, HRW Junior Researcher.

Aleksandr Aksenyonok, RIAC Vice-President, Aleksander Kramarenko, RIAC Director for Development, Ruslan Mamedov, RIAC Program Coordinator, and RIAC experts Maksim Suchkov, Aleksey Khlebnikov, Grigoriy Lukyanov (HSE), and Nikolay Surkov (MGIMO) took part in the discussion on the Russian side.
