On October 27, 2017, Russian International Affairs Council hosted a roundtable on the attitude of Russian Federation and the U.S. to security challenges and political solution in Afghanistan. Russian and American experts took part in the meeting.

Andrey Kortunov, RIAC Director General, Ivan Timofeev, RIAC Director of Programs and RAS Academician, Vitaly Naumkin, Academic Director of the RAS Institute for Oriental Studies, RIAC member, made welcoming speeches at the opening of the event.

On October 27, 2017, Russian International Affairs Council hosted a roundtable on the attitude of Russian Federation and the U.S. to security challenges and political solution in Afghanistan. Russian and American experts took part in the meeting.

The event was divided into two sessions. In the first session the sides gave their assessment of the current situation in Afghanistan and expressed their positions on political solution, in the course of the second session the sides shared their views on the possible ways and formats of cooperation on this track. Barnett Rubin, Associate Director at the Center on International Cooperation of New York University, Oleg Kulakov, lecturer at the Military University of the Russian Defense Ministry, and Richard Olsen, former US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, made reports. The sessions were moderated by Irina Zvyagelskaya, Senior Researcher of RAS Institute for Oriental Studies, RIAC expert, and Scott Worden, director of Afghanistan and Central Asia Programs at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

Representatives from Brookings Institution, Johns Hopkins University, EastWest Institute, Saint Petersburg State University, Moscow State Institute of International Relations is an academic institution run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Institute of World Economy and International Relations also took part in the meeting.
