From November 29 to December 24, 2021, at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the XVI Conference of Arabists “I.M. Smilyanskaya Readings” was held. Within the framework of the meeting, which brought together 128 speakers from nine countries, there were three public lectures, three round tables, and seven sections devoted to the history, economy, and culture of the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.

During the conference, there was a discussion on the wide range of issues related to the Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa. During the “I.M. Smilyanskaya Readings”, participants discussed topics related to the history of the Arab countries, the impact of the pandemic on the socio-economic development of the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the transformation of the regional security system. In addition, issues related to the contribution of Russian scientists to Arab studies were raised. Also, the main directions and trends in the development of Arab studies were discussed.

On November 29, 2021, there was the opening of the XVI Conference of Arabists “I.M. Smilyanskaya Readings”. Vasily Kuznetsov, Head of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies (CAIS) of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS, RIAC Member, delivered opening remarks. During the opening of the meeting, there was a presentation of the collective and individual monographs of the CAIS staff and external experts. The monographs were prepared following the XVI Conference of Arabists “I.M. Smilyanskaya Readings”.

On November 30, 2021, there was a public lecture of Vitaly Naumkin, President of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS, RIAC Vice-President. His lecturer was devoted to the Russian South Arabian Studies.

The meeting was attended by the RIAC Experts: Vitaly Naumkin, President of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS, RIAC Vice President; Alikber Alikberov, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS; Vasily Kuznetsov, Head of the CAIS at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS, RIAC Member; Irina Zvyagelskaya, Director of the Center for the Middle East Studies of the IMEMO RAS, RIAC Member; Irina Deryugina, Head of the Center for Agricultural Research and Food Security of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS; Aleksandr Yakovlev, Chief Researcher of the CAIS of the RAS; Aleksandr Filonik, Leading Researcher of the CAIS Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS; Boris Dolgov, Leading Researcher at CAIS at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS; Igor Matveev, Senior Researcher of the CAIS at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS; Sergei Serebrov, Senior Researcher at CAIS at the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS; Gurgen Ghukasyan, Senior Researcher of the CAIS at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RAS; Tatyana Tyukaeva, Research Fellow of the Center for the Middle East Studies of the IMEMO RAS; Marina Sapronova, Professor of the Faculty of International Relations of the MGIMO University; Dmitry Zhantiev, Associate Professor of the Institute of Asian and African Countries at the Lomonosov Moscow State University; Andrey Chuprygin, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the HSE; Grigory Lukyanov, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the HSE; Valery Matrosov, Lecturer at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the HSE.

In addition, Ivan Bocharov, Program Assistant at the RIAC, attended the conference.
